COLOR TABLE

The following information is an attempt to define some color combinations (background and text).
The colors used (the color names are mine), include (not necessarily in order) are: white (normal and bolded), Blue (normal and bolded), Green (normal and bolded), Cyan (normal and bolded), Red (normal and bolded), Magenta (normal and bolded), brown, Grey, yellow (normal and bolded and Black.

To use color for both background and text in what otherwise is a textual paragraph, create a single row, single cell (within the row) table. Define the desired background in the cell <td> definition and use the color attribute of the <font> tag for the text. For example, this is RED text.

It appears that at least some of the otherwise "normal" HTML tags have no impact when used in these types of tables. For example, <blockquote> has no indentation affect. (DG: Place other restrictions here ...

It also appears that the color of text as specified in the <BODY> tag bercomes the default within the complete file/document and at least some other settings are ignored - if the BODY indicates blue text, black color code on while background does not work, it goes back to blue.

For my tutorial on understanding color, see the end of the chart.

I have, in the past, had trouble understanding rules of the color codes and how to apply them. I have recently begun to realize my problem. I attempt to document it here so I can refer to these definitions again and again as needed.

In the real world of daytime (we call this the "day world", one deals with color basically in a negative mode. We start with light - white light - which is a combination of all colors of the spectrum. Color generally is derived as a result of something (e.g. pigment) reflecting back to the viewer ONLY those colors it did not absorb, ergo: negation. In the real world of electron color, we start with a complete absence of light - the picture tube - both the surface and the inside - are both black, no color of any kind even white. We call this the "dark world".

I'm reminded of a tale, by a friend, Walt Cropper, who spoke of an "electric dark" - the opposite of an "electric light". Sometime, DG, you should fill in that story here.

A complete change of thinking is necessary. Instead of trying to understand electron color in terms of the day world, we need to think of it in terms of the dark world. In the day world, shades are constructed by negating things while in the dark world ALL color is the addition of things.

In the day world, no action is necessary to obtain white as it shines all around all the time. In the dark world, to obtain white, full intensity emission of the three light sources is necessary. See the next paragraph about the sources.

To give an example: In the day world, to make the color pink, one starts with RED, say pigment, which is a substance that absorbs, from the white light around it, all colors of the spectrum except the basic RED color. That it reflects. One adds to the Red material some white material - which absorbs nothing - which merely reduces the intensity of the reflected red, again negating the reflection.

In the dark world, one again starts with red, but this time it is a positive start. Of the three sources or emitters (electron guns): Red, Green and Blue, the primary RED is obtained by emitting ONLY from the Red source; the blue and green sources are mute. When I learned - by trial and error - that to make pink required the emission of some blue and some green with the red, I could not understand. When I began to think of the dark world, it began to make sense. The result above (in the day world) was the lowering of the intensity of the red reflection. Reducing the intensity of the red source in our dark world accomplishes nothing. However, when one realizes that white is an equal intensity of all three source emitters, a lesser, but equal, intensity of all three sources would still produce white. Lets say that full intensity is 250 units in each source. So our reduced intensity white is say 200 units of red, 200 of blue and 200 of green; this produces white.

If we now add additional intensity (say an additional 50 units) of red - taking it to 250 units or full intensity, we get pink! What do we have: 250 intensity-units of red and 200 intensity-units of both blue and green. It appears to the uninitiated viewer that, because we started with 250 units of RED, we got pink by adding blue and green: an accurate perception, but an inaccurate understanding. A better understanding is to start with a lighter shade of white (200 of each) and then added extra red to make pink.
