HISTORICAL QUOTE:
The following submitted by Barbara A. Morgenstern and was taken from the old records of the Coopersburg Moravian Church (1883-1949).
Mrs. Mary Ann Amanda Ritter daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Giering of Emmaus, born August 30, 1834, married twice - her second husband having been shot to death (by a jealous lover) - and on the eleventh day of October 1784 entered into the third marriage with Joel Ritter of Emmaus. Some time after this marriage Bro. Ritter and S.(?) moved to Coopersburg and soon became interested in organizing a Moravian Church at this place, thus becoming two of the original founders of the church which now stands on Main Street. The deceased had one child by a former marriage and is survived by one sister Mrs. Jose Iobst, of Emmaus and two grandsons. She was confined to the house with dropsey for the last 20 weeks. During the last two weeks her death was hastened by a slight stroke of paralysis and on Friday morning, March 9, 1906 peacefully passed to her eternal reward. Aged 71 years, 6 months and 5 days. Interment Moravian Church Cemetery, Emmaus.Author's comment: Mary Ann's sister was named ROSE (Giering) Iobst rather than JOSE (Giering) Iobst.
MEDICAL INFORMATION:
Dropsey and Paralysis - see Historical Quote above.
CHURCH INFORMATION:
The following is quoted from the Funeral Section of the Emmaus Moravian Church Records:
1906, Mar. 13 Ritter, Mary Ann Amanda, widow of Joel Ritter[sic - see following quote] his wife Catherine mn Doll, member of the Coopersburg Church. Thrice Married. Her first husband, James Schumaker died in the war. After being 6 mo married her second husband David Seem was killed by shooting at the hand of an infatuated rival lover. Joel Ritter, her third husband died July, 1902. She was a faithful member of the Moravian Church. She was ailing for many years but only the last 20 weeks confined to the house. The cause of death was dropsy. She fell asleep, Friday, March 9 aged 71 years 6 months and 8 days. Rev. A. Hayes Keech conducted funeral services at the house in Coopersburg, at the Moravian Church in Emmaus, interment in our cemetery. I assisted in these services. s/A. E. AbelNOTE about start of quote - There appears to be a phrase missing. It is believed the section should read: "...Ritter, daughter of Johannes Jacob Giering and his wife ..."
