OBITUARY :
The following appeared in the Tuesday, August 24, 1993 edition of the Wilkes Barre newspaper:
Dr. John Giering, Physician for 53 years Dr. John F. Giering, Westmoreland Avenue, died Monday in Wlkes Barre General Hospital.
Born in Wilkes Barre, he was the son of the late Eugene and Agnes Fleming Giering. He was a graduate of St Thomas College, now the University of Scranton and the Jefferson Medical College, class of 1931. He did post graduate work at Harvard University and the University of Michigan. Dr. Giering served his internship at Wilkes Barre General Hospital. He served four years in te Army Medical Corps in World War II and attained the rank of lieutenant Colonel. While serving in England, he was made an honorary member of the Royal College of Physicians.
Prior to his retirement in 1985, Dr. Giering's career expanded 53 years. He was the past president of the Northeastern and Pennsylvania Heart Associations, was a former director of the Wilkes Barre Rheumatic Fever Clinic and was a consultant in medicine at the Wilkes Barre Veterans Administration Hospital. Dr. Giering was a past director of medicine at Wilkes Barre General Hospital and a former member of its board of Directors. He was a past treasurer of the Pennsylvania Society of Internal Medicine and was amember of the American Medical Association, Pennsylvania Medical Society and the Luzerne Counrty Medical Society. He was a former member of the Philadelphia College of Physicians. In 1965, Dr. Giering was chosen Man of the Year by the Friends of the St. Michael's School. He was a past president of the Lehigh Valley Medical Association and was a diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine. He resided in Kingston for most of his life.
He was a member of the St. Ignatius Chuch, Kingston. He was preceded in death by his brother, Herbert and a sister, Francis Burke. Dr. Giering and his wife, the former Miriam Goeringer, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last October 3.
Surviving in addition to his wife are daughters, Mrs Thomas (Diane) Wasilewski, Dallas; Mrs. James (Carol) McDonald, Dallas; three grandchildren; brother, Eugene, Kingston.
Funeral will be Wednesday at 9 from the Harold C. Snowdon Funeral Home, 420 Wyoming Ave., Kingston with mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 in St Ann's Chapel, Kingston. Interment will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call Tuesday 7 to 9.
