QUOTATION The following is quoted from Amy' Ritter's E-Mail message.
Joel Ritter of Fayette started his own garage business, which he ran for many years, next to his father’s mill. He also worked as an electrician during the time that Rural Development brought electricity to outlying county towns. In addition, he was elected Town supervisor; a position he held for several terms and which involved wearing many hats back then; during the time (likely -a far better time of fewer taxes) when there were far fewer county and state employees. He was also a steward for the several one room school houses of the area, though I am not sure if that was tied to being Town Supervisor (I suspect it was separate). Dr. E. P McWayne, R. W. Ritter and Joel Ritter were 3 of 8 local business people who donated their own money to start a local fire department; at a time local residents voted against it; due to the harshness of the economy. This was shortly after R. W. Ritter lost his mill (having no insurance -because back then it was nearly impossible to get insurance if you didn’t have a piped hydrant system). Joel Ritter was later named Fire Chief of Fayette, was very well respected in the community and served in that role for just over 25 years.
