COMMENTARY:
-- At the time of their marriage in 1938, Miriam was living at 420 Adams St. in South Bethlehem. Francis was employed as a laborer and was living at 1511 Calypso Ave. in West Bethlehem. (Lehigh County marriage license #63841). After their marriage, Miriam and Francis lived for a time at 1511 Calypso Ave. in West Bethlehem. Around 1942 they moved to 49 W. Union Blvd., Bethlehem, where Miriam operated a beauty shop. Later she worked for a number of years as a sales clerk at Farr's Shoe Store at the corner of New and Broad Streets in Bethlehem. In 1999 she was living at 1130 Center St., Bethlehem, PA. In 2002 she was living at Country Meadows retirement community at Green Pond.
-- Francis was born at 1118 Spring St. in West Bethlehem. He grew up in West Bethlehem and, as a young man, was a noted baseball player in the Bethlehem minor leagues. After his mother died, he left school at a young age while still in Nitchman Junior High School and went to work for Bethlehem Steel Corp. in South Bethlehem.
-- Immediately after their marriage, Francis and Miriam lived at 1511 W. Calypso Ave. in West Bethlehem in the home of Francis' father, Robert Berger. Around 1943 they moved to 49 West Union Blvd. in Bethlehem. Sometime later they purchased a home at 1130 Center St. in Bethlehem near Bethlehem High School.
-- Francis worked in the drop forge at Bethlehem Steel Corp. for most of his life, retiring in 1976. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed hunting for small game, groundhogs, and deer. In the 1950s he built a summer cabin at Promised Land State Park in the Pocono Mountains in Pike Co., PA where the family enjoyed many summer vacations. He was a quiet, gentle man by nature and was over six feet tall. He was a member of Christ UCC of Bethlehem and the Bethlehem MORA Club, a life member of Rosemont Fire Company, and member of Hellertown Sportsmen's Club.
-- Francis died in the Leader Nursing and Rehabilitation Center near Bethlehem and was buried in Memorial Park Cemetery. (Obit in "The Morning Call", Allentown, PA, Tuesday, 14 January 1986, pg. B06)
