GIERING MILL:
On April 30, 1857, Ludwig Giering (known at that time as Lewis Giering) purchased "one hundred thirty acres and seventy perches" of land in Richland Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania. This transfer (a copy of which is in the author's file) is found on page 55 of the deed book of Venango County. The transfer indicates there are houses and buildings on the property, but makes no mention of any "mill structure." A map of Richland township in that era indicates where this property is located. On a road running south-west from the village of Nickleville at a point approximately 3 miles from the then edge of Nickleville, where the road crosses Mill Creek is the land. Slightly south (about 0.1875 miles) of the road/creek crossing is the junction of a road running east to the village of Porterfield. Approximately 0.125 miles northeast of the creek/road junction is a dam on Mill Creek which appears to be on Lewis Giering's land. The map locates "G Mill" at the northeast corner of the road/creek junction with Lewis A. Giering's house/home across the road and slightly north of the junction.
As the transfer does not indicate a mill structure, we must assume that Lewis Giering built the Grist Mill that figures prominently in the history of the township.
As more information concerning the operation of the mill is discovered, it is to be added here.
The 1880 census shows both Lewis and Tilghman as being alive. However Lewis' occupation is Tailor while Tilghman's occupation is Miller. This implies that prior to 1880, Lewis (he was 73) had retired from the Grist Mill and the business was being run by Tilghman. There are some indications that Tilghman's older brother, Herman also worked at some point in the mill.
During the period 1860 through 1877, the land belongiong to Lewis was leased out and some parts were transfered for rights-of-way. All indications are that, upon Lewis' retirement, the land holdings as well as the business was transfered (effectively, but not legally) to his son Tilghman. Lewis died ????.
In 1898, some five plus years after Tilghman died, his widow, Evelyn (AKA Evaline, etc.) desired to dispose of the inherited asset. There had been no legal transfer from Lewis to Tilghman and no legal transfer from Tilgman to his widow.
Page 143, of Deed book 240, Venango County contins a deed transfer (quit-claim) recording that gives Tilghman's widow, Eveline [sic] sole ownership to the property. This transfer lists the various offspring and spouses for both Lewis and Tilghman, and is the initial source of information concerning that family line.
A copy of this deed transfer is in the hands of the Author.
COMMENTARY:
-- The DOD for Tilghman is conflicting. The Nickleville Cemetery record, found at the Franklin Library indicates 1892 while the LDS record (at the same library) for the Academia Church of Nickleville indicates Jan 17, 1893.
-- Evelyn was a member of the Emlenton Presbyterian Church at the time of her death.
