OBITUARY:
The following Obituary appeared under "Deaths of the Day" in the (Allentown) Morning Call, Page 6, Wed., Feb 16, 1972. The text of the Obituary was repeated in a Tribute in another section of same issue (an image of that tribute appears below):
H. J. Giering,
GroundskeeperHoward J. Giering, Sr., 76 of 1945 Riverview Road, Bethlehem, died Tuesday in Sacred Heart Hospital. He was the husband of Helen (Mullen) Giering.
Giering was a groundskeeper for 33 years at Fairview Field, Allentown, and at Breadon Field, which later becanme Max Hess Stadium. These ball parks were used at various times by the old Allentown Cardinals, Allentown Chiefs and Allentown A-Sox, former major league farm clubs.
Born in Emmaus. he was a son of the late Marcus and Jane (Dietz) [sic] Giering.
He was an Army Veteran of World War I.
He was amember of the Grace Episcopal Church, Allentown.
Surviving besides his widow are six sons, David and Richard, both of Bethlehem, Howard J. of Allentown, William J. with the Army in Germany, Robert J. of Portland, Ore., and Thomas W. in Salem, Mass.; eight daughters, Sandra, wife of Julio Martinize, and Linda, wife of Bonnie Cruz, both of Bethlehem, Dorothea , wife of Oliver Kramer of Bethlehem #3; Mrs Evelyn Aquila and Betty. wife of James Buckles, all of Alentown; two sisters. Mrs. Clara Bitting and Mrs. Adella Stahl, both of Emmaus; a brother. Arthur of Emmaus; 63 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 11A.M. Friday in the Weber Funeral Home, 502 Ridge Ave., Allentown. Calling hours will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday.
