AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH - LEXIS-NEXIS:
As noted above, I was responsible for the development and implementation of Full-text access technology. The development occurred a decade before the advent of the internet. That technology is the basis of most if not all of the current search engines today. For more details about the activity during the development period, the reader is directed to the reprint of a two part magazine article concerning that period.
Part One covers the pre-development period and covers the main development activity.
Part Two identifies the continued development work and the pre-LEXIS (OBAR) activity
FIRST A DISCUSSION ON THE FOUNDING OF LEXIS. In late 1972 and early 1973, a business entity was formed as part of the Corporate subsidiary of the Mead Corporation, Mead Data Central. The business was known as LEXIS and was to use the full-text access technology in the pursuit of clients in law firms specifically dealing with their legal research. The business became highly successful and that success is due in great measure to the president, Mr. James Rubin. It must be noted, however, that the business was founded based on the availability of the full-text access technology and without that technology, the business could not have existed.
THE INTEGRATION OF NEXIS. At the formation of LEXIS, I returned to the development arm, Data Corporation (later to become known as Mead Technology Laboratories - MTL), where the original Information System Division was reconstituted with a copy of the developed full text access technology software (Data Central) as it was developed to that time together with all of the "non-legal" business under contract. The mission was to locate new business ventures based on the\at same technology. The division was not required to show a profit, but could not have a loss - all income was to be used in the pursuit of the new business ventures.
Many attempts at various business activities were unsuccessful until the middle 1975. At that time a number of sales calls were made to the Librarian at The Boston Globe Newspaper. This culminated in a contract to automate their Newspaper library. In the middle of 1976, they ceased manual clipping of the newspaper for inclusion into their paper archives. They sent, to the MTL Service Bureau, daily electronic tapes containing the electronically equivalent clips of the daily newspaper. The contents of the transmitted data was added to their data base which they used 24 hours a day, seven days a week from color terminals in their library. Terminal use was by members of the editorial staff as well as by the library staff.
In late 1977 a contract was consummated with The Philadelphia Inquirer for the installation of a copy of Data Central (the Full text Access software) onto their library computer for use in a manner similar to that in being at The Boston Globe. By mid-1978, this contract was in the final stages of implementation, when the Mead Corporation decided to transfer the Newspaper business from MTL to MDC and it became a part of LEXIS. After a contractual re-organization, it became the basis of NEXIS.
I left Mead as a result.
