MILITARY:
Joined the Air Force in 1966, sent to England in 1967 for 13 months and in early 1968, eight airman from England was chosen to be involved in the Turkey/Cypress War as a communications agent (code name, cemetery 21). Each airman went to different locations in Turkey. For Tom, this involved living in a mud hut in a small village where there was a central watering hole for washing of clothes. He worked with the Turkish underground should Cypress over run Turkey. Six air man were killed at Tom's site.
The most memorable moment was when, in the middle of the night while going the his communications site, he forgot the password. Not speaking to much Turkish it was easy to forget the password. The Turkish guard pointed his machine gun in Toms face and repeated to ask for the password for the night. Tom, arguing to let him pass, shoved the machine gun away and drove off. The Turkish guard had every right to shoot but Tom was relying on the guard remembering him from before. After arriving at the communications site, Tom proceeded to shake with fear, realizing what he had just done.
After 5 months, came back to the states and under went a special 10 month training to go to Viet Nam. This was to replace the previous group that got wiped out who replaced the previous group to that, who got wiped out. According to the state side newspapers, this area had no fighting. The Viet Nam assignment was a 6 month duty. Having only 5 months of service left by the time of completing the training, Tom was offered an early out in May 1969.
