QUOTATION The following is quoted from Amy' Ritter's E-Mail message.
Richard William Ritter is my great grandfather and he moved to Fayette, NY, around 1875. The family story was that he left home on foot; somewhat angry at the time - of his father’s choice to remarry (<2 yrs after their mother died). His sons name, and the many documented visits between Fayette and Emmaus show that any animosity was likely short-lived. There he met and later married his wife (Martha Goodman). The two of them, their son and his wife’s family (McWayne) were leaders in their community in many ways; much of which surrounded their church. For many years, they met and took care of church related businesses, including management of financial matters, maintenance, payments to the church minister and helping to arrange many related events. The church itself has quite a story tied to it in that two congregations shared the same church for many years and eventually merged. At the time this was something unheard of in NY. In terms of other information, Richard William was referred to as R. W. Ritter but was known as “Billy” by his close friends and family. He got his start in farming work and later formed a very lucrative Milling business; which many local farmers relied upon, and which burned down in the later 1920s when, he was older. The area always struggled with water access during fires and did not have a fire department at the time.
