COMMENTARY:
-- Hiram and Clara were married at Dryland Church by Rev. W. H. Wotring. At the time of their marriage in 1905, Hiram was living at Butztown and Clara at Wagnersville. (Northampton Co. marriage license #12796).
-- Hiram was a farmer near Santee's Mill, Hanoverville. He died while picking cherries with his son, Ray Dewalt, at a cherry tree about a half mile from their house. Ray lay down beneath the tree while his father started to pick some of the cherries. The boy fell asleep and, on awakening, found his father laying on the ground nearby. A doctor was summoned but Hiram had died almost instantly. Close to where his body lay was a pail containing about five quarts of cherries.
-- Hiram was a member of the Monocacy Grange and the Reformed wing of the Hecktown Church. About 1918 he took up residence on his father's farm of 192 acres. Later, fifteen acres were sold as bungalow sites and Hiram continued to farm the remaining property. Around 1921 Hiram moved to his uncle's place, known as the Jacob Herman farm. (Article and obit in "The Morning Call", Allentown, PA, Monday, 25 June 1923, pg. 5 and in "Easton Express", Easton, PA, Monday, 25 June 1923, pg. 2)
-- Hiram died intestate. The executor of his estate was his widow, Clara. (Estate file #25176, Register of Wills, Northampton County courthouse, Easton, PA)
-- Clara died at her home, 1034 Elm St. in Bethlehem, and was buried in Hope Cemetery at Dryland Church.
