ADOPTION NOTE:As reported by Brenda Strobel, John's third wife brought a child CHARLES HALL into the marriage. There is no evidence as to whether this first child (of this marriage) was ever adopted into the Giering family so there is a question about whether he should or should not be listed.
FAMILY ABANDONMENT - "Rand Williams (Delilah's son) reports that his Grandfather, John abandomed his family (wife Susanna, maiden name, Bowman) about 1905 and moved to New Castle, Pa where he took up with Sarah Hall, Nee Cook. As a result of this abandoment, Susanna had no income. At the time of the abandonment, there were three living children: William, Delilah and Charles. William was old enough to make it on his own; Charles was about 10 years old and had to go to work to support his Mother. But what of Delilah (age about 14)? Delilah's Mother could not properly care for Delilah. She implored her sister, Lucinda (wife of Henry Snyder) to temporarily care for Delilah until she (Susanna) could again accept the responsibility which never occured. She (Susanna) subsequently married again (it is believed that no divorce was ever granted, but the marriage did take place) to one Charles Bechtol. Delilah, when she became of age, went to work in a hospital in New Castle (Pa) as a Nurse.
John's second wife, Susanna Bowman apparently re-married upon his death. There are two photo captions and an obituary that supports this assumption. The obituary is of her Mother, also Susanna Bowman. The first of the two photo captions is found on her son Charles' worksheet - see above for the link address and the second is found on the worksheet for her Grand-daughter, Irene. See the photo below for Susanna's second Husband, David Bechtol.
